Shirley May, winner of the North West Poetry Slam in October 1999 has performed at prominent venues across the North West. She runs writing workshops for local festivals, schools, and for Manchester Leisure Services. She is presently a senior study support worker/mentor, working for Manchester library Services she works with young people studying at key stage 2 to key stage 4 and above.
She is a popular poet who has performed across the North West region including The Yard Theatre The Pankhurst Centre The Green Room......the Contact Theatre and Liverpool's Everyman Theatre.
She has run creative writing workshops for young people together with Pete Kalu at Moss Side Powerhouse Youth Centre and at several other Youth venues. She has recently been engaged by Cheshire Social Services and Help The Aged to work with older people on a creative writing project in 2001 - 2002. Between 2003-2004 extensively worked with young people on poetry projects in schools, local theatres and youth centres.
